halloween is creeping up on us…

My son wants to be a dinosaur for Halloween. It’s a recurring theme in our household and we are swimming in plastic dinosaur figures, dinosaur games, dinosaur candies…you name it. I’m not a huge fan of the giant costume with head poking out for a 4 year old. (I mean, a wild 4 year old running around in that? Not so safe… Remember, I’m a nervous mom!) My sis found these awesome dino hoodies on etsy, which got me trolling around on the site. I’m loving the possibilities of a homemade costume…made by someone else! There’s just not enough time in the day to whip something up, so why not rely on the talent represented on etsy?

I’ve scouted some cute things for our readers who didn’t order their kid’s Halloween costumes in June:

Dinosaur Stomp:

dinohoodieToo cool for Barney? How about these adorable dino hoodies? Pair them with a dino tee, maybe some dino slippers from the Gap, and you’re good to go. Plus, the hoodie is cool long after Halloween is over!

For the extremely laid back Halloween costume, how about this adorable dinosaur skullcap?

Are you a good witch or a bad witch:Haloween tutu

Your little girl may have a witching hour, but she’s more of a good witch. She’ll look too cute in this witchypoo tutu.  A candy corn inspired tutu would make for great pics.

Let us know what your kidlets are being for Halloween this year, and any great Halloween costume finds you come across!

rub a dub dub…one baby in a tub

Spa Baby Tub

Spa Baby Tub

I was weirdly intrigued when I saw this European style tub in New York Magazine. Not for the womb-like qualities, or that my baby would be warm and snuggly from toes to chest. I was purely thinking of myself…and how this tub could be one less accident waiting to happen. Who cares if lil’ peanut is squooshed (although in the pics the kids look pretty happy), he can’t slide out of your grip. All I know is this could be my ticket to peace of mind while bathing him. I do see some issues cleaning down south, but I must say it did catch my eye. It’s almost like being in a warm swaddle, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s BPA, PVC, lead and Phthalate free.   Let us know what you think… Would you use this tub?

If it’s your cup of tea, the Spa Baby tub is available from spababytubs.com

swine flu-to vaccinate or not to vaccinate? that is the question…

I don’t know about the other pregos out there, but one debate amongst my pregnant friends is surely whether to vaccinate or not for the H1N1 virus. Everyone and their mother has chimed in with an opinion.  My OBGYN says YES, my pediatrician says YES, but my mother, mother in law and husband say NO (by the way none of them have a medical degree).  I am still on the fence, and would love to hear from all of you.  Here’s an interesting pro vaccination article in the NY Times.

Pregnancy Is No Time to Refuse a Flu Shot

By ANNE DRAPKIN LYERLY, MARGARET OLIVIA LITTLE and RUTH R. FADEN
Published: September 28, 2009

This article is by Anne Drapkin Lyerly, Margaret Olivia Little and Ruth R. Faden.

Pregnant women are deluged with advice about things to avoid: caffeine, paint, soft cheese, sushi. Even when evidence of possible harm is weak or purely theoretical, the overriding caveat is, “Don’t take it, don’t use it, don’t do it.”

In a few contexts, the admonition is warranted; in most, it is merely inconvenient and anxiety provoking. But in the case of pandemic influenza, it may be deadly. With the second wave of swine flu at hand, and up to 50 percent of the public at risk, the usual mode of thinking about pregnancy and medications threatens to make a worrisome situation worse.

The dangers of this mentality became frighteningly apparent this summer, when a study in The Lancet reported strikingly high rates of death and of complications like pneumonia in pregnant women with H1N1 influenza. Pregnancy meant a fourfold risk of hospitalization, sometimes with a tragic outcome; all the pregnant women who died had been relatively healthy to begin with.

tylenol recalls

September 24, 2009

http://tylenol.com/?s_kwcid=kids%20tylenol%20recall

You may have heard that McNeil Consumer Healthcare (the makers of TYLENOL®) is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Children’s and Infants’ TYLENOL® liquid products that were manufactured between April, 2008 and June, 2008. All products manufactured met internal specifications. However, the company is implementing this recall because during this period, an unused portion of one inactive ingredient did not meet all quality standards. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it was decided to recall all Children’s and Infants’ TYLENOL® liquid products listed below, which were made during this time.

Parents and caregivers who have questions or concerns should contact their child’s health care provider or our consumer call center at 1-800-962-5357 (available Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time). Consumers can find the lot numbers on the bottom of the box containing the liquid product and also on the sticker that surrounds the product bottle. The lot numbers of the affected products are listed below.

These actions do not apply to Children’s TYLENOL® Meltaways and Junior Strength TYLENOL® Meltaways. The voluntary recall applies only to select lots of Children’s and Infants’ TYLENOL® liquid products.

spotlight – aiko decelles (dan dan)

get-attachment1.    Company profile

“dan dan” in Japanese means gradual or step-by-step. The concept behind the brand is clothing that grows step-by-step with the child, focused on the common frustration that kids grow out of their clothes too quickly. Our design is about function: wear it for longer and/or wear it more than one way.

2.    How did you get into this business?

My mother is the craftiest person I know. She was the inventor and seamstress of many of my clothes growing up. When the opportunity arose for me to leave the corporate world to start a venture of my own, I knew kids fashion is where I wanted to be.

3.    What/who inspires your designs?

There are many. Early on I based much of my vision on womenswear and concepts that could be recrafted to meet my requirement of clothing that provides growth and versatility for kids. While I still keep an eye on womenswear, my inspiration now comes mostly from my target audience: infant and toddler girls in their natural being of self expressionism, individuality and creativity.

4.    Biggest business moment?

Within 18 months of launching into this new venture, I landed a private meeting to show my collection to one of the most highly coveted luxury department stores in the country!

5.    Who is your role model?

Inventors, entrepreneurs, artists .. people who create something from nothing. I continue to amaze and have a true appreciation now for the enormity, passion, burden and sheer tenacity it takes to seek an idea through to fruition.

6.    Three things you would take to a deserted island?

My husband, a solid pair of shoes and an extra pair of eyeglasses.

7.    Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Beach living with my husband and a family of healthy kids and two dogs close to the ocean, “dan dan” boutiques to tend to, philanthropic efforts to save animals from cruelty, and perhaps some time living abroad.

8.    Describe your (collection) style in 3 words.

cheerful, accessible, useful
