I’m always looking for new and unique big brother/ big sister gifts. I never want an older sibling to feel left out. When baby #2 was born, my friends were nice enough to think of my big guy, too, and it definitely helped him during a confusing time. The ‘I’m A Big Brother’ and ‘I’m a Big Sister’ books are great gifts, but after scouring the stores, I found 2 cute and funny alternatives that will have you laughing, too.

‘The World of Zoe: Mommy’s Having a Watermelon’, written by Danny and Kim Adlerman and illustrated by Megan Halsey is just about the cutest chapter book about a young girl who isn’t quite aware she is about to become a big sister. Well, she thinks her mom is carrying something, but she assumes it’s a watermelon because after flinging a watermelon seed into her mom’s lemonade, she drinks it. And we all know what happens if you swallow a watermelon seed… Zoe thinks it’s funny until her mom’s belly starts growing and she starts to think she’s going to be in trouble. With plays on words and an adorably funny protagonist, this book is perfect for older kids.

‘How to Be a Baby…by Me, the Big Sister’, written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by Sue Heap, is a riot.  I love the way this know-it-all sis explains what it means to be a baby…babies can’t do anything fun while the big sis gets to do everything. It’s a perfect way to deflect some of the jealousy kids might feel when a new baby is brought home. (Don’t worry…the big sis comes around and the book ends on a tender note.) The book’s quirky and whimsical drawings add to its appeal.

Another fun thing for older siblings is ‘My New Baby And Me: A First Year Record Book For Big Brothers And Big Sisters’. It’s the perfect activity book for a sibling so they don’t feel left out. And they get to fill in info on their growing and changing little brother or sister.
